Sir,
Enclosure 8.
Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.
hongkong, 23rd. February, 1906.
160
I have the honour to inform you that the
subject matter of your letter of the 27th. ultimo regarding the proposal to hold bi-monthly instead of monthly Criminal Sessions at the Supreme Court has received full consideration at the hands of the Committee of this Chamber, and 1 am instructed to reply that they are of opinion nc material advantage would accrue to the persons called on the jury by the proposed change.
The jury list is long enough to ensure
that no person need be called upon to serve more than once in each year and it would be a convenience to business man if consideration could be given to this point and also to the
demand for attendance of no greater number of jurors than neces-
-sity calls for.
The Committee are however much against
the proposal to establish bi-monthly Sessions on the ground that it is a great injustice to prisoners to be kept on remand
longer than is absolutely necessary.
1 am to add that my Committee appreciate
the courtesy of the Government in giving them an opportunity of expressing their opinion on this matter and they trust His Excellency the Governor will be able to endorse the view con-
-veyed above.
I have etc., (sa.) A. R. Lowe
Secretary.
Conourable
The Colonial Secretary.
